Dental Cleaning

The foundation of a healthy mouth — and the simplest thing you can do to protect your teeth long-term.

What is a professional dental cleaning?

A professional dental cleaning, or prophylaxis, goes beyond what your toothbrush and floss can do at home. Using specialized instruments, our hygienist removes hardened deposits of plaque and tartar from every surface of your teeth — including the areas below the gumline that are impossible to reach on your own.

What happens during the appointment?

A routine cleaning typically takes 45–60 minutes and includes:

  • Scaling: removal of plaque and tartar with hand scalers and an ultrasonic device
  • Polishing: a gentle abrasive paste that removes surface stains and leaves teeth smooth
  • Flossing: thorough cleaning of the contact points between teeth
  • Fluoride application: a quick treatment that strengthens enamel and helps prevent cavities

If it has been a while since your last cleaning, the appointment may take a bit longer — but there is no reason to feel embarrassed. We are here to help, not to judge.

How often should you get a cleaning?

For most people, once every six months is ideal. If you are currently in orthodontic treatment, we may recommend a cleaning every three to four months, since braces and aligners create extra hiding spots for bacteria.

Why it matters beyond clean teeth

Research consistently links gum disease to systemic conditions including cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Regular cleanings are one of the most cost-effective ways to invest in your overall health — not just your smile.
