Orthodontics for children: when to start and what to expect
As a parent, it’s natural to wonder whether your child will need orthodontics, when to see a specialist, and what happens if you wait too long. The good news: the earlier you ask, the more options we have to help.
Here’s everything you need to know.
How can you tell if your child needs orthodontics?
A specialist will always give the most accurate diagnosis, but there are signs you can watch for at home:
- Persistent thumb-sucking after age three can cause front teeth to protrude and the palate to narrow.
- Prolonged pacifier or bottle use past age two can also affect bite development.
- Mouth breathing (instead of through the nose), often caused by enlarged adenoids or tonsils, can alter how the facial bones grow if it’s not corrected.
- Teeth that don’t fit together properly, crowd each other, or a jaw that looks pushed forward or set back.
Some factors are simply genetic and unavoidable. But catching them early makes all the difference.
What age should a child first see the orthodontist?
Specialists recommend the first visit at age 6. By then some permanent teeth are already in, and we can evaluate how the bones and teeth are developing.
That doesn’t mean your child will need appliances right away. Often it’s just a monitoring visit. But if there’s something to correct, acting at the right moment prevents much longer and more complex treatment later.
Types of treatment by age
Preventive orthodontics (from age 4)
This is used to interrupt habits that could cause problems later — like thumb-sucking — before the bones finish forming. It’s the gentlest and earliest intervention.
Interceptive orthodontics (from age 5–6)
Here we actively guide the growth of the jaw bones while they’re still developing. The goal is to steer that development so permanent teeth have the space they need. This saves a lot of time and complexity down the road.
Braces (from age 11–12)
Once all permanent teeth have come in, braces can align them precisely. This is the most well-known treatment and remains highly effective for every level of complexity.
Invisible aligners for children
Yes, aligners work for kids too. They’re transparent, removable, and completely custom-made. Your child can take them out to eat and brush their teeth, which makes hygiene much easier. It’s a modern option that more and more families are choosing.
In some cases we combine approaches — interceptive orthodontics first, aligners later once all permanent teeth are in.
Why starting early matters
Taking your child to the orthodontist at age 6 isn’t overreacting — it’s investing in their long-term health.
- We track how permanent teeth are developing
- We address habits before they leave a lasting mark
- We guide jaw growth while it’s still moldable
- We reduce the risk of protruding teeth that can be injured
- We boost your child’s confidence from an early age
- We prevent more invasive treatment in their teens or adulthood
